The End

June 14, 2010
Well goodness, the past 3 days have been busy but exciting.

On Friday we had our last group. It was bittersweet. It's sad to leave these wonderful groups of students but it's also great to see changes throughout the week. After our group sessions we went back to our lovely hotel and got ready for the Special Olympics closing ceremony. We did our Go Do song and had a slide show. It was a great experience. Most of the Sunrise group were athletes so they were at the closing ceremonies. It was great to have them involved in our song.

Saturday came and we went to some local shops. I think the local instruments (rainsticks, maracas, and more) were popular amongst our group. We then took a drive around the island to Rum Point. The beach was great. It was a good day to relax after our week of work.

Sunday came and a few of us got up to watch the sunrise. After that Elaina made us pancakes and we went back to the beach. Most of us only planned to stay for an hour, but stayed for 4. So we all came home a bit toasty. We had a pretty long layover in Miami but finally arrived to Boston around 1:20 am. Georgia and I got a taxi and headed back to my place. By the time I got to bed, it was 3. Phew...

But overall it was a great trip. It was a great experience for me and I will always remember it.

Attempt #3

June 11, 2010
Okay, so this is the third attempt of writing this post. I tried this morning but our ride came a bit early, I tried this afternoon but then we had to work on our inservice, so now, while I'm waiting for water to boil (cooking pasta for dinner) I can blog about it.

Yesterday was great. Both of our sessions went really really well. The first one involved switches. We had one student who for the first time since we've been here we saw him smile. He pressed the switch and heard "hello" and was a...

More successful sessions!

June 9, 2010
Today was just great. We went to the lighthouse school for the second day. Our first group was there when we arrived and we did some of the same activities as yesterday and added some more. We added the song we are doing for the closing ceremonies, Go Do. We also added I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends in which we adapted the verses so it would be: Listen to (name) as he/she plays the drum..  and then we'd add space for them to play. It was pretty successful. We also worked on follo...

First sessions!

June 8, 2010
Good Evening (almost morning). Today was a really great day. We had our first session at the Lighthouse School.

The morning started with a Monday Morning Devotion where we were introduced to the whole school and they sang songs and the national anthem. After that we were shown to our room and set up for our group. To our surprise, the group doubled in size. No worries for Mike, April, and I as we handled it like champs. With getting to know the students, we found some of their strengths and ...

Day 1

June 7, 2010
Well, I woke up this morning really early (probably 3:45 or so). Georgia and I left the apartment around 4:25 or so to meet up with Eddie and Mike and head to the airport. We were all very excited and also very very sleepy. Our first flight was to Miami and I slept most of the way. We had a pretty long layover in Miami and then met up with the whole crew (minus Erin) and headed to Grand Cayman! After arriving, we got off the plane and it was hot. We travelled through customs and immigration s...

All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go...

June 6, 2010
Today was a day of laundry, scarf making, cleaning, ironing, and packing. I managed to fit everything (and a djembe) in one suitcase. I'm pretty impressed with myself. Here's a picture of me ironing on my non-iron board...

In preparation, Mike and I got together and worked on some activities for both groups at the Lighthouse School. I'm very excited to try different activities with these groups. Georgia and I went to the fabric store today to get some material for scarves. The group I work...

About Me

Laurynn Scholar Hi everyone! I'm a 7th semester Music Therapy student at Berklee College of Music in Boston. I plan to complete my studies in December 2010 and begin an internship. Not sure where I'll be yet, but I'd love to work with technology or Neurologic Music Therapy. I am very excited to be sharing music with some of the students of Grand Cayman!
