Look Mom, I'm on TV!

June 11, 2010
Julianne, Georgia and I were all on the Cayman’s local news show, “Daybreak” this morning.  It was definitely an interesting experience being interviewed on live TV before 7am, ha! However, it was an awesome opportunity to share a bit of what we do, and what we have done on the island.

Yesterday, we had our last sessions here on the island.  We were fortunate to do two groups, one of which at the center and one at another preschool offsite.  The preschool that we visited was an interesting experience.  First of which, the building was rundown with ants swarming all over the floors.  The lights were all dim, there were no toys, and apparently rusty metal objects in the playground.  There are no regulations in Cayman, only suggestions, so nothing is illegal about the operation. There were so many children in each classroom, and they sit in their chairs at their tables and lay with their heads down when it is time for a break or time for a snack.  It looked like a school from a third world country, which was surprising for a country that is obviously NOT third world.

Today, after an in-service at the Early Intervention Programme, Elaina, Racheal, and I finished making all of the instruments for the Special Olympics Closing Ceremony tonight.  I am SO thrilled to be going to be a part of this amazing, beautiful event.  Last night we were fortunate to catch the last of the games, the awards, and a basketball tournament.  It was really fun!

The Island

The first group was a “tough crowd,” and took a little while to warm up. However, it was clear that both the c...

Welcome to Grand Cayman

June 8, 2010

Wow, this first afternoon and evening on the island has been amazing.  After dropping off my bags, I joined the rest of the group for a beach trip.  It was so refreshing to jump into the ocean and wash off the stress of the flights.  I got to hear about my teammates’ mornings, and made it back to the Inn to find a broken refrigerator and quite a bit of our food ruined.  Lucki...

Layover in Charlotte, N.C.

June 7, 2010
Clearly I am still learning how to do this blogging thing, because my first post attempt failed. Here we go for round two! I am currently in Charlotte N.C. about to depart on the second leg of my journey.  I am so excited to be joining my team members on the island, and cannot wait to hear how the first day on site went.  I know Racheal and Elaina are going to be amazing today :)  Today was an early one - 3am to be exact! Luckily I slept the entire way to the Queen city, so I have definitely ...
